Nesh's Notes

Esti Dal -Kodály

English translation of "Esti Dal", Kodály, Zoltán
Evening darkness overtook me near the woods;
I have put my coat under my head (i.e. as a pillow),
I have put my hands together
To pray to the Lord, like this:
Oh, my Lord, give me a place to sleep,
I am weary with wandering,
With walking around and hiding,
With living on foreign land.
May Lord give me a good night,
May he send me a holy angel,
May he encourage our hearts' dreams,
May he give us a good night.

Der Bräutigam

The Bridegroom
Down from all the mountaintops
Sound such happy greetings -
It is the return of spring
That calls to the green forest!
A little song rang out
Up to the quiet castle -
Your beloved has sung it,
And he lifts you upon his steed.
We ride so swiftly
Far away from all the people. -
The air rustles so gently
In the solitude of the forest.
To where? In the moonlight
The forest is already pale. -
The night murmurs softly -
do not ask
Where love goes to its end!
Nun ruhen alle wälder

Nun ruhen alle Wälder,
Vieh, Menschen, Städt und Felder,
Es schläft die ganze Welt;
Ihr aber, meine Sinnen,
Auf auf, ihr sollt beginnen,
Was eurem Schöpfer wohlgefällt.

Wo bist du, Sonne, blieben?
Die Nacht hat dich vertrieben,
Die Nacht, des Tages Feind;
Fahr hin! Ein ander Sonne,
Mein Jesus, meine Wonne,
Gar hell in meinem Herzen scheint.

Der Tag ist nun vergangen,
Die güldnen Sterne prangen
Am blauen Himmelssaal;
Also werd ich auch stehen,
Wenn mich wird heißen gehen
Mein Gott aus diesem Jammertal.

All of the woods are now at rest, Cattle, people, towns and fields, The whole world is asleep;
But you, my thoughts,
Up, up, you should begin to do What pleases your creator.

Where are you now, sun?
Night has driven you away,
Night, the enemy of day.
Go on your way; another sun,
My Jesus, my delight, Is shining really brightly in my heart.

Day has now gone,
The tiny golden stars are on display In the blue hall of the heavens; Similarly I shall also be there
When I am called to go by My God, away from this vale of misery.

Waldesgruss

Through the forest autumn deep silencedraws a breath, draws a touch,
the leaves touch all the branches,
touch me too, touch me too.
As it's warningly rushing to my feet,
good forest! good forest!
I understand your solemn greetings:
soon, yes soon!

Tired, the sun is leaning towards the sea,
sink down, sink down;
Oh! she longs for the day's heaviness
to grave, to grave.
Like the floods solemn waves
faded away, remotely reverberated,
a sound comes through my chest:
soon, yes soon!
Bide with us, for evening shadows darken,
And the day will soon be over, soon be over,
O bide with us, for evening shadows darken.
The Hunt is Up

Jaglied-Mendelssohn
from Sechs Lieder im Freien zu singen, Op. 59, No. 6

Through tree tops swaying
flash golden rays
below distant summits,
the misty vale.
From Castle it echoes,
the horn calls out,
and bray the horses in the air.
Now lands and lakes,
now stirring clouds,
are deeply gleaming
in the dizzying flight.
Now darkness again
shrouds rider and horse.
O love, O true love,
so let me go!
Always further and further
the sounds move yon,
through forest and moor,
but where, but where?
Invigorating fervor,
sweet quivering desire!
Plumes fluttering lofty,
hearts beat as fire.
